London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham Careers
Having recently been appointed as Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s Chief Executive, I know what it’s like to be excited and daunted in equal measure by the prospect of a new role. That’s what makes it exciting.
I’ve worked in and around Hammersmith & Fulham and public services for over 30 years and, each day, I still thrive in thinking how the council can make a difference, and see what a difference a group of like-minded, motivated people can achieve.
That’s why I’m pleased you’re thinking about joining us.
We don’t want to be your run-of-the-mill council. Over the next few years, we need to create an energy and passion for public service within the borough that stands out from the rest. You might like to think we’re a little bit of an up-start in local government. Different is good, because the status quo isn’t working.
Our Vision sets a unique ambition for our residents, businesses, and visitors. We’re about getting things done, but doing things with people and not doing it to them. Sometimes we don’t even need to do anything, other than break down a few barriers.
That’s why we are looking for special people – people with a drive, determination, and open mind to deliver our Vision for Hammersmith & Fulham. Your attitude is just as important as your experience.
We already have a great bunch of people working here, but fresh ideas and new perspectives always help us see alternatives.
In return, we are developing “Our People” – an offer for our employees that we are excited about.
So please take time to find out more about our roles, vision, and our unique offer. Visit the borough and be surprised at what a great place we have here.
I hope we’ll be seeing you as part of our team soon.
Hammersmith & Fulham is a borough that’s on the up. It’s a great place to do business and there are exciting developments taking place, creating new prosperity. But we want that prosperity to be shared by everyone, not just the few. That means ensuring that local residents benefit from new homes, and jobs, transport and environment improvements, and most importantly, that our young people are prepared for the rewarding careers being generated here.
Our ambition is to create prosperity that everyone can share in, so that no-one is priced out of the borough or left behind.
At the heart of that ambition is ‘West Tech’, a global beacon for innovation and a leading place for tech and creative businesses, education and research. Our thriving tech and creative startup scene has been bolstered by our new growth and innovation partnership with Imperial College London. The university’s expansion in White City has contributed to its incredible regeneration and will grow in the years to come, as the area is transformed into an innovation district that benefits both local residents and businesses.
That’s where you come in – using your skills to fulfil our promise to provide economic growth for everyone and insuring that our residents benefit from the thriving local economy and unprecedented investment into the area.
We want to become the best council for our residents, business and visitors. To do this we need the best people.
In 2018, we’ll be developing a comprehensive ‘Our People’ offer. This is a strategy that sets out how we’ll become the best place to work and achieve. To show our commitment and drive, we’ll join the hundreds of organisations aiming to get on the ‘Best Companies to Work For’ list. We can only do this if our employees genuinely feel, and say, it’s a great place to work.
The key areas of the strategy are:
Employee experience: Putting your experience of working for Hammersmith & Fulham Council at the heart of our offer – creating a highly competitive and comprehensive package of rewards, benefits and opportunities.
Employee development: If you want to learn alongside your practical day-to-day work, this will be the place for you. We’ll offer a comprehensive blend of learning opportunities to support your personal and professional development.
Leadership and management: The best organisations know how crucial the quality of leadership and management is. More importantly, we want our managers to become coaches for your career, really helping you reach your ambition and potential.
Our culture: We want to create the right working environment. We already know we’ve got some fantastic people and a supportive environment. Now we want to enhance our offer through transforming how we work to become a driving force for change and innovation.
We are an organisation who knows that every individual offers something different and unique. We are looking for people with genuine potential, drive, and commitment to our purpose as a Council.
Whether you are an experienced professional or just excited by our Vision to create a Council that is compassionate, caring yet commercial and innovative.
Your attitude is important. You rightly need to have drive, ability and potential but you should also be open to learning about yourself and others. You take responsibility and ownership for your own work, wellbeing and development – making the most of what we can offer you. Our relationships with others is what will make the difference.
This isn’t a place that is going to be quiet. Significant change is on the horizon, you will need to adapt quickly and support others. This isn’t a place where people can sit back – we are looking for highly engaged people to help us achieve our vision.
And most of all, we want people who genuinely believe that we can change the world. We may be starting in this little corner of West London, but we have to start somewhere.
With a brand new strategy, Our People, putting our workforce front and centre of our ambitions and change it’s no wonder we want to create an amazing team of people who deliver.
This will be the place where you can demonstrate your ability to transform an organisation through how we work with our employees to create a world-class workforce. Your unique brand should fit with our values and drive.
This isn’t a quiet team, we are leading the way in cultural change. We need the best talent who know how to design and deliver change, involve people and bring them with us and use information to measure and demonstrate our impact.
There are opportunities at all levels for the right people. Want to join a team and make it award-winning? Then feel to look at the opportunities for you.
Across the council we are doing amazing things, supporting over 200 different service areas. We have opportunities at all levels within finance, ICT, legal services, programme management, communications, facilities management, contract and commercial services, customer service roles and many more career opportunities.
Given the breadth of services we support, you don’t get better opportunities or exposure to different service areas in one organisation. Whether you’re at the start of your career or experience, the stretch and the challenge should excite you.
Investment and innovation is central to how we work and this has influenced our move to the systemic model for Social Care, significant investment in the Family Assist programme and specialist training for social workers. We have created a culture where front-line teams and staff are highly valued, not only within the service, but across the whole of the Council.
We are fortunate to have significant political backing from Members which supports us in putting vulnerable children at the heart of our decision making. Whilst cost is important, making decisions in the best interest of the children and families to whom we provide services is more important, and we feel this makes us unique.
The Moving On programme is a great opportunity to do things differently. One of the underpinning themes of the programme is to involve residents and those receiving support from Children’s Services by working together with them to make decisions, rather than making decisions on their behalf. This is evidenced by our desire to put the voice of the child at the heart of our decision making.
Working for a large London Borough like Hammersmith and Fulham will not be without its challenges, but we are seeking individuals who will embrace this, and poised with significant backing from across the Council, make positive change to vulnerable children’s lives.
Local government faces some tough challenges in the years ahead. These challenges follow a decade where many local authorities have already reduced costs significantly, while the need for our services continues to grow.
In Hammersmith & Fulham, we want to be the best council in the country. But we want to go further still. Deprivation and disadvantage continue to hamper the life quality of too many people in Hammersmith & Fulham, who live within one of the wealthiest cities in the world.
We’re different to most councils. We’re radically reforming every aspect of the council to modernise the way we run services. We intend to push at the boundaries of convention, collaborating with our partners, communities and businesses to radically rethink how we deliver our services.
We’ve already set out on this journey.
- Our new Family Support Service will see early intervention and family support services provided by a new homegrown organisation, and some public health services are soon to follow.
- Our innovative Travelcare service has demonstrated the potential of co-production and bold procurement to transform service quality and customer satisfaction.
- Our social care services are practice leaders in their field, and we are now developing the technical solutions to underpin our relationship-centred approach.
And we’ve established an innovative Public Service Reform agenda, bringing together our considerable commissioning, transformation, strategy and change management capability with our public health service offer. At the heart of this is an integrated approach to whole system reform which will equip us to fundamentally rethink how we serve and support those who depend upon us at every stage of their lives. An immediate priority for PSR will be to introduce a strategic programme of review of how to best serve our residents in a modern world. The programme will drive forward a deep and systemic challenge to our existing operations and arrangements, and stimulate a renaissance in our approach to public service delivery in Hammersmith & Fulham.
PSR will provide a focus for our ambition and creative thinking as we realise the council’s vision and define an ambitious blueprint for local government into the decades ahead. We’re seeking ambitious and creative people who are equally passionate about public services AND have the talent to help us achieve this.
Our Vision sets a unique ambition for our residents, businesses, and visitors. We’re about getting things done, but doing things with people and not doing it to them. That’s why we are looking for special people – people with a drive, determination, and open mind to deliver our Vision for Hammersmith & Fulham. Your attitude is just as important as your experience.
We are passionate about place-making, matching the expectations of our residents with high-quality homes including genuinely affordable housing, and creating places where people will aspire to live and work. As well building new homes and encouraging new businesses we are working to ensure our residents benefit from current unprecedented levels of investment in the borough.
Through our business plan and vision, the council has clearly set out the kind of place we want Hammersmith and Fulham to be.
Our wide range of services encompass all that’s essential to every resident, business and visitor to our borough. Our aim is to help make the borough an attractive place, one that is safe, clean and green, and one in which our community takes pride.
We take an ethical approach to the administration and collection of Council Tax and Business Rates and we provide housing benefit and Council Tax support, as well as helping with free school meals and clothing for those in need.
We also manage an extremely busy Contact Centre dealing with all incoming telephone calls; a reception area dealing with visitors to the main Hammersmith civic buildings; and we oversee complaints and other enquiries for the Council. Our Registrars Office sees our residents at milestone events in their lives and we are renowned for our special events including firework displays and the annual Boat Race. We also have three very well supported football clubs within the Borough, bringing all sorts of match day issues from Health & Safety to Parking and Licensing.
So the choice is yours. From Highways Engineering to Parking, Building Control to Environmental Health, Community Safety to Waste Reduction, we’re sure you’ll find the career for you within Residents’ Services
